Pets are a good match for some teens with Autism
By Dr. Alan Kadish NMD
The amazing reliability of pets, with the good sense of their unwavering support toward the owner is an excellent means of reducing stress in teen autistics.
The University of Missouri study was actually centered on the use of photos, with an interpretation secondary to pictures of pets.
Our experience with our ASD teens is that pets are pivotal in the right environment. They become their rock with listening skills that eclipse those of humans.
Keep in mind that you many need to be the caretaker for the pet’s needs, however the potentials for better behaviors and interactions outweighs the efforts.
Interestingly there is a reduction in allergies when children have dogs as pets.
We encourage our patients to explore this avenue of socialization and often find it an excellent means of reducing overall stress, building responsibility and engaging with others in similar circumstance.
